The starting point is a coincidence: I was on holiday in Havana when, at the end of the second day, Fidel Castro’s death was announced. Without a press credential or official clearance, I decided to take the risk and photograph anyway. Over the nine days that followed, I moved among the crowds in the streets of Havana and Santiago de Cuba documenting the national mourning.
"Se Murió Fidel" is my first photobook, published by Vento Leste Editora. Somewhere between visual reportage and authorial essay, the work portrays a nation in a crucial moment of transition, in the days immediately following Castro’s death, in 2016.
